Hello everyone,

I need your expert opinion. We have an iDM brine-to-water heat pump Terra SWM 3-13 HGL-P. Initially, the plan was to install an additional thermal storage tank for the cooling function, alongside the hygienic storage tank for domestic hot water preparation. Our heat source is a 160m (525 ft) deep geothermal probe. However, instead of an additional thermal storage tank, we now have a separate heat exchanger for passive cooling.

This has left me a bit confused, and I am concerned that we might not be able to use the cooling function as planned or desired. I know several other homeowners (all with geothermal heat pumps using probes) in the new development who all use the additional thermal storage tank. Does this mean they automatically have active cooling? Is there something different about our system? Have I misunderstood something?

Best regards

I am rather skeptical about cooling through the underfloor heating system. It does not dehumidify, and controlled ventilation systems won’t help with that during the peak of summer either. It’s better to invest in a simple split air conditioning unit for selected rooms.

@michert is generally right. Just buy an air conditioner.
But regarding your question: What is the purpose of the thermal storage? The ground is already cold. Nothing has to be "actively" done there. If you don’t actively program the heat pump to avoid it, it should work "automatically." You don’t even need to engage the compressor. It doesn’t get more affordable than that.

No idea what this "thermal storage tank" is supposed to be for. Maybe just another term for a buffer tank? You don’t need it in winter, and even less in summer for "cooling."

If the heat pump can provide cooling, then everything should be fine.
What does the heating specialist say, and what does the technical datasheet indicate?
