ᐅ Carport attached directly to the house? Canopy over the main entrance?

Hello everyone,

I just need to clear up some questions and ask about your experiences.
We are planning to build a house on a plot of about 550m² (5920 sq ft) (see sketch).
The house should be placed as far "down" on the sketch as possible (southeast) because we want to maximize the distance/space at the "top" of the plot (northwest). I hope I have explained that clearly.

Originally, I wanted a double carport with a storage room behind it, but I think that takes up too much space (about 9m x 6m (30 ft x 20 ft)?). Therefore, we are now considering a single carport with a side storage room (blue sketch).

Another option would be to build the carport directly attached to the house and skip the house entrance canopy (also marked in blue), simply extending the carport to replace the entrance canopy. Do you understand what I mean?
At the moment, I’m a bit hesitant about attaching a carport directly to the house because it won’t be built by the main construction company. I am concerned about sealing between the carport and the house, and if there is any damage, who would be responsible, etc.

Maybe this is all completely unproblematic? What experiences do you have?

Has anyone placed a carport similarly and integrated the house entrance canopy this way?
What would you do?

Thanks and best regards!

We are currently considering a similar situation, and from almost everything we have seen in pictures, a large carport extension with covered utility areas for bicycles, trash bins, etc., seems too bulky and heavy. We would like to connect everything (carport-utility room-house entrance for a dry access), but somehow we are still missing the decisive idea. So far, we liked best a carport standing free with some distance. Keeping some distance from the house wall definitely makes sense to prevent driving rain, plaster moisture, dirt, etc., or you could attach a metal flashing to the wall at the connection as a drainage solution. Of course, it also depends on whether you plan a roof pitch. My main concern here is more about a potentially too bulky appearance; the technical aspects could be solved.

Hi, yes, really difficult considerations. To us, a large carport also seems too bulky, and for now, we will go with the plan shown in the sketch from my post. The carport will be a bit longer so that there is room for the trash bins. Around the corner, a shed will be attached directly to the carport. I think that could look quite good, and we will have plenty of space in front of the house. The house’s canopy has been redesigned slightly larger by the architect.

Hehe, almost the exact same "problem" here. Since much of it is based on personal taste, I always have to see it as a picture. We were told that the beautiful house would be obscured by it... which is true. Therefore, this time it might have to be a case of function follows form, even though I would prefer it differently. We’ll see, and I’m curious to see what ideas come up here.

@Anmacatili Just got the idea from the general contractor to replace the carport with a double prefabricated garage that includes integrated space for trash, bikes, and tools, placed at the side of the house right on the property line and then plastered in the same color as the house (a stylish gray roll-up door). This now seems to make sense for us because the path to both the main and side entrances would be shorter. I found some pictures online where this was done nicely. I’m not sure how it would fit with your plan (south side, setback requirements, etc.), but maybe it’s an idea worth considering. There was also a note that with our previous carport idea, it would have to be higher than the bathroom/guest room windows and therefore look quite bulky. Maybe you could set it forward or back a bit to avoid it looking like too wide a wall.

Our property borders directly on a large meadow belonging to my parents. I’d prefer not to place a large garage right in front of their view. That’s why we are leaning more towards a carport. We simply like the look better. It will only be a single carport, as a larger one would take up too much space.

Thanks for the tip anyway. Maybe we’ll change our minds about it. Who knows.

I understand; you could plant the side view, but you know best on site. At first, I found the idea a bit shocking since I’m not really into cars or garages. However, I liked the concept of attaching it as a low-profile structure offset from the main building after seeing various pictures. Lately, I’ve been leaning more towards a simpler, single carport design because I really don’t like most of those bulky structures. We’ll see how my thoughts might change here.
