ᐅ Building a Retaining Wall in the Garden: Formwork Blocks or L-Shaped Blocks?

In the garden, we need to build a retaining wall along 20 meters (65.6 feet). It will have a height of 1-1.2 meters (3.3-3.9 feet) and must hold back the soil on the property. It will only be supporting the garden. No road or building needs to be supported.

1) Which type of wall is more suitable? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a retaining wall with L-shaped blocks versus formwork blocks that are filled with concrete?

2) How should the foundation be prepared? Should it be gravel or a strip concrete foundation (how deep)?

3) What is the approximate cost per linear meter? Does anyone have relatively recent experience?

Does the development plan even allow for 3m (2m) retaining walls? In our case, a maximum of 1m is permitted (which is barely enough for many to level the plot). A 3m high retaining wall will collapse if it is not structurally designed correctly, and in unfavorable conditions, this could result in fatalities.

Whether drawn or photographed is secondary. But some kind of illustration is necessary, otherwise it will remain a popcorn thread (and will lose subscribers by the hour).

See the sketch on the front page. It also shows how he has terraced his plot.

I will only build my retaining wall once a structural engineer gives the approval. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.

You don’t respond to posts at all, do you? Or to questions?

You will get that approval. That’s certain. The only question is where your wall will be located and whether you are willing to give up that much land and money in your account. If I were your neighbor, I would be laughing so hard to myself seeing that you are already starting to build a wall.

I respond to posts when I consider it useful. Please accept that I will not provide any further information on these points.

I would like to see where the respective development is located. A site plan would be helpful. What does the zoning plan say? 3 m (10 feet) retaining walls? Is there a building permit / planning permission for this?

Why is there a strong desire to level the property?

Your neighbor must take the terrain slope on your property into account. This means that the rising ground results in higher earth pressure on their wall. Therefore, you cannot build your 1m (3 feet) wall directly on the boundary, but with a distance of 1-2m (3-6 feet), it would be possible. If you have a good architect and structural engineer, they will advise you accordingly.

Is leaving it as is not an option for you? If so, and you do not cooperate with your neighbor, how does your neighbor intend to construct the retaining wall? The wall's footing will have to be placed on your property—have you considered that?
