Hey

I’m planning to build a birdhouse myself in the next few months and wanted to ask if anyone has any tips for me.
Thanks

Hey

Definitely build the roof shingles strongly, so you can hang the house. Build the roof yourself, but use lightweight, thin wooden panels to keep the house from becoming too heavy.
By the way, why do you want to build the house? I find that a rather unusual pastime.

Thank you Honks. But wouldn't water get in there? I mean, there is a groove at the top, and water could possibly drip in through it...

Hey David

Use a lightweight aluminum strip that fits the edge and nail it in place with short nails. Coat the wood with waterproof varnish (paint over both the aluminum and the wood) and let the roof overhang. That way, the birds will definitely stay dry.
And why are you building it?

Thanks, Honks, that will definitely stay dry.

I'm building the house because I found a dead bird in the garden early this morning; it was either frozen or starved.

Should the concrete slab be thick, or does it not matter?

Oh, that’s terrible.

I recommend using a frame made of thicker wooden strips (2cm x 2cm) and then thin wooden panels for the walls and floor/roof. The birds are so light that even a 0.5cm (0.2 inch) panel can hold them. You could also build a small "balcony" where you can attach a little cup for their food...
