Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA BILLY bookcase that unfortunately creaks or squeaks with almost any movement. It’s especially annoying when I pull something out or lightly touch the shelf – the noises are quite unpleasant and make an otherwise very practical storage solution less enjoyable.

My question to the community: What are effective methods to permanently reduce or completely prevent these creaking sounds on the BILLY bookcase?

I’m particularly interested in practical and easy-to-apply tips that DIY enthusiasts can use without much effort or special tools.

For context: I’m aware that the issue often comes from the friction between the shelves and the side panels or the attachment points. But I’m unsure whether lubricants, greases, or cushioning materials work best, and how to apply them correctly without damaging the bookcase.

Looking forward to your advice!

Hello everyone! 🙂

I had the squeaking on my BILLY shelves too – so I just rubbed a thin layer of wax (candle wax) on the contact points. It made a surprisingly big difference!

If someone doesn’t like sprays or doesn’t feel like doing complicated fixes, here’s a quick DIY trick:
Melt some candle wax, apply it, let it harden briefly. Then the shelves will be much quieter.

Give it a try, it costs almost nothing and doesn’t create any long-term mess. 🙂

That’s brilliant! I tried it right away, and the effect is definitely noticeable! 🙂

I would add that it’s important to clean the area thoroughly before applying, otherwise the wax won’t adhere well.

Thanks so much for the super simple tip!

Brief and to the point:

- Felt strips with a thickness of 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches)
- Double-sided tape works well
- Silicone spray at contact points
- Check and tighten screws
- Do not use oil-based lubricants

Nothing more is needed if the work is done cleanly.
