Hello,

Our construction company recommends a backwater valve with pump function, Kessel Pumpfix S, due to a slight slope and basement. The cost will be roughly between €4,000 and €5,000.

Alternatively, we could install a standard backwater valve for only a few hundred euros.

What do you think? Are there clear advantages or disadvantages? How do you decide on something like this?

Best regards and many thanks

The requirement for a backwater valve is stated in the official approval for the wastewater connection. This is always necessary when the property is located below the backwater level.

The flap with a pump function ensures drainage during a backwater event. You have to decide whether you can manage without a toilet and shower for a while. Usually, it lasts only a few hours. Another consideration: electrically operated valves rely on power. If the power goes out, they do not close or pump.

I personally have two mechanical backwater valves. In the past 17 years, I have needed them only once.

I hope this helps as a guide for your decision.

@Vicky Pedia is correct. A flap is yes, everything else is unnecessary. Many other events are more likely!

Use a flap valve instead of a pump!

@Vicky Pedia
Thank you, that is already a good statement.

We live on a hill; water can only drain away. We have a manual flap (also called a check valve).
