We are still in the process of building our house but are already trying to get quotes for the absolute minimum exterior work, which should ideally be completed before or at the latest shortly after moving in. For the time being, we do not plan to outsource any further work but might do some of it ourselves within the first one to two years. However, we might also have more done by professionals later on.

Specifically, the work includes the following:
  • Installing a splash protection strip around the house (9 m by 10.6 m (30 ft by 35 ft)) (items 3 to 5)
  • Filling the driveway with gravel from the crane and scaffolding area up to street level (4 times 15 meters (4 times 49 feet))
  • Raising the cistern covers with concrete rings accordingly (items 2 and 9).
  • Securing the light well in front of the basement window (approx. 1.5 m deep, 2 m wide (5 ft deep, 6.5 ft wide)): one side with L-shaped retaining walls because of a nearby patio door, the other side with planting rings (items 6 and 7)
  • If there is any gravel left: creating a terrace base from it (6 m by 3.5 m (20 ft by 11.5 ft))

So far, we have received one quote. We hope to get another, but the site visit is not scheduled until next week, and we have been warned that preparing the quote might take some time. Other companies have either declined due to busy schedules or have not responded at all.

How do you assess the attached offer? Is it inexpensive/expensive/realistic? What have similar works cost you in recent years (we are building in the Rhine-Main area)?

Expensive.

Over 70 €/m (foot) for curbstone including subbase... Not quite outrageous, but somewhere between expensive and pharmacy prices.

145 €/t (ton) for gravel... 25 €/t (ton) for the material, yet 5 tons are delivered, and the company is making a fortune...

Good luck with the second quote!

Expensive, expensive. 145 euros per ton. Quite steep. Almost a deterrent offer!

Thanks, then let's take our time and wait for the second quote. Even though I am, of course, aware that we live in an expensive area and prices have generally increased over the past few years...

Hi,
is the offer from a landscaping contractor? You could also ask a structural or civil engineer at the same time. They often offer paving work as well, which can be cheaper.
I am currently gathering quotes in the Rhine-Main area. Make sure to have the quotes divided between materials and labor. Especially for gravel, the pricing seems questionable.

We have now received the second quote. It's about €2500 less with natural stone for the light well 🙂 (although without the cistern rings yet). The splash protection strip is significantly cheaper in particular.
This will probably be the choice, even though they won’t be available until the end of October.
Good thing you stopped me from making a rushed decision after the first offer.
