Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to buy an Ikea Besta shelving unit and would like to know if there are any DIY ideas here in the forum on how to customize and adapt the furniture individually. I am particularly interested in design techniques that go beyond the standard options, so not just attaching handles or simple vinyl wraps, but more creative modifications that are also functional. Maybe you have tips on conversions, custom-built interior elements, or ways to enhance the surface quality in a high-end way? I look forward to suggestions, examples, and your experiences!

One of the most effective yet relatively simple ways to customize an Ikea Besta is by replacing the front panels with custom-made or painted wooden boards.

That sounds reasonable, especially since I have a specific color scheme in my house. Are there recommendations for types of wood that are easy to work with and also take paint well?

You can also paint the Besta modules with metallic or special effect paints.

How durable are these paint finishes, especially under heavy use?

Looking forward to more details and practical experiences!

When it comes to wood types, MDF boards are the most suitable for painting. They have a smooth surface, absorb paint well, and are relatively affordable.

For durability, a polyurethane-based paint is recommended. It is resistant to scratches and moisture.
