Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to buy an Ikea Besta shelving unit and would like to know if there are any DIY ideas here in the forum on how to customize and adapt the furniture individually. I am particularly interested in design techniques that go beyond the standard options, so not just attaching handles or simple vinyl wraps, but more creative modifications that are also functional. Maybe you have tips on conversions, custom-built interior elements, or ways to enhance the surface quality in a high-end way? I look forward to suggestions, examples, and your experiences!

One of the most effective and relatively simple ways to customize an Ikea Besta unit is to replace the fronts with custom-made or painted wooden panels. This results in a significantly higher-quality appearance and allows you to adjust the front according to your preferred color. Installing LED lighting inside also creates a modern look and enhances functionality.

Those with DIY skills can additionally have glass or wooden shelves made to measure to better organize the interior layout.

I’m happy to add the following:

The Besta modules can also be painted with metallic or special color effects. For this, I recommend using a high-quality primer and superior spray paints to achieve an even finish. If you prefer a more rustic look, surface treatments like shabby chic or chalk paint can be applied – this gives the furniture a unique character.

Another tip: interchangeable side panels or shelf elements with removable fabric covers create a very individual appearance and allow for easily changing looks.

Super interesting topic! 🎉 I upgraded my Besta with a combination of foil and paint work, and also installed LED light strips – it looks absolutely amazing! It’s incredible how much you can achieve with a manageable amount of effort.

What I found especially cool: I installed small rails to add adjustable dividers or drawers myself. This makes the system very flexible to use. Anyone who wants a personalized look should consider something like this. Good luck with your DIY project – you can do it!

So, a bit of color, a bit of light, and the Besta comes to life! 😊

I can only recommend replacing wooden handles with leather straps. For me, this added an unexpectedly elegant touch without looking overdone – simply beautifully minimalist.

Also, stickers or hand-painted designs (if you’re talented) are a fun way to add some personality. Not a masterpiece, but a bit of cheer that's easy to notice. At least it made my friends smile.

For additional storage space, you can install internal strips to create extra shelves.

Magnetic closures instead of cabinet handles provide a clean appearance.

The doors can be covered with mirror film, which visually enlarges the room.
