Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA BILLY bookcase and am now facing some difficulties during assembly. In particular, I often struggle with correctly aligning the back panel and inserting the shelf supports. Are there any proven tips or methods to avoid the common issues when assembling the BILLY bookcase? I want to avoid stripping the screws or wasting time on unnecessary adjustments.

Also, I am interested in how to best handle the often somewhat soft particleboard structure to prevent damage. I would appreciate any advice that makes the assembly as smooth and stress-free as possible!

Hello @luispin,

I can fully understand your issue, as assembling the BILLY shelf does have its challenges. The back panel is often the tricky part because it needs to be perfectly aligned during installation, otherwise it can warp. My tip: first align the back panel flush at the bottom and one side edge, and secure it there with a few nails before fixing the rest. This helps avoid mistakes caused by repositioning later.

For the shelf supports, it can be helpful to gently clean the dowel holes with a thin screwdriver or an awl before inserting them. This makes the insertion easier and prevents tearing.

Regarding the particleboard structure, I recommend always tightening screws slowly with the correct screwdriver rather than using a power tool. Also, it’s often useful to pre-drill the screw holes slightly, especially near edges, to avoid splitting.

Additionally, have you fixed the shelf to a wall? That makes the entire construction more stable and reduces the risk of parts coming loose. What tools do you have available? This is often crucial for the quality of the assembly.

Fixing the back panel first at the bottom edge provides a lot of stability.

When installing the shelf supports, it helps to gently tap them in with a small hammer or by hand to prevent the holes from fraying.

Always screw particle boards in slowly, otherwise the material can splinter.

Hey Luispin, don’t get discouraged! 🙂 I remember assembling my first BILLY shelf – it wasn’t that complicated once you got the hang of it! In the end, you have a great shelf that’s almost indestructible!

That’s really the key! I did exactly the same, and it went much smoother. Also: always allow plenty of time and if possible have at least one helper – it makes everything much easier! You can do it! ;-)

Hello Luispin,

I would like to add that the BILLY shelf often has issues with the flatness of the base surface. If your floor or the support surface is not perfectly level, the back panel and side panels can warp, causing the shelves to tilt.

My advice: Be sure to check the base with a spirit level before assembling the shelf and, if necessary, adjust it using small shims or felt pads. This usually helps prevent a warped structure.

One more question: Does your shelf have the version with glass doors? If so, installing the doors is another critical step that should be carefully planned.

I wish you the best of luck with the assembly and am happy to assist further if needed!
