Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify an Ikea Pax wardrobe soon and have several questions regarding its assembly and disassembly. The main question is: How long does it usually take to fully assemble and disassemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe that is about 200 to 250 cm (79 to 98 inches) tall and equipped with standard interior fittings?

I am interested both in the pure assembly time and any extra time needed for potential difficulties or staffing considerations. I want to estimate this realistically since the wardrobe will not only be assembled once but also disassembled for moving purposes.

I would be very grateful for your experience or tips, especially if you can provide typical times for average DIYers. Are there also differences in the time required when assembling the wardrobe alone or with two people?

Best regards!

I assembled the same model last week – a friend and I took just under 2.5 hours.

That matches my experience. Assembly usually takes less time than disassembly because the latter requires more care to avoid damaging any parts. Having a helper is definitely recommended.

Additionally, keep in mind that older cabinets may require extra time for repairs or adjustments.

On your own, assembling a 2.5-meter (8 feet) Pax unit will easily take 4 to 5 hours, with disassembly taking about the same time. With two people, the time is usually cut in half. It is important to have the tools ready at hand.

My rule of thumb for assembling and disassembling with someone else is about 3 hours per process. Just plan well and don’t rush – then everything goes smoothly.

Based on an analysis of various user reports and personal experience, average times per task are roughly between 2.5 and 4 hours.

Thank you for the summary, that helps me a lot. Could you also advise whether it’s generally better to do the dismantling with two people, even if you might have a bit more time? Or is it manageable alone without much trouble?

That makes sense. Are there specific parts to be especially careful with during dismantling, which might be easily damaged?
