We will be moving into our new build soon, and the topic of waste bins came up. We don’t have a garage, carport, garden shed, or any paving yet. Where could we store our trash bins so they won’t blow away in strong winds?

We have a covered corner terrace, but I’d rather not keep them there due to odors, and I believe that might also not be allowed for fire safety reasons.

Should we drive posts into the gravel and chain the bins to them? Or does anyone have a better solution?

On the house wall opposite the main weather or prevailing wind side... this has worked without any issues for 2 years, until the trash bin enclosures could finally be installed...
Odor only occurs when the lid is opened.
Fire protection? What could possibly be not permitted there?

The east side of the house should be sheltered from the wind. Either leave them uncovered there or buy storage boxes and put the bins inside.

In your question here, you are asking about the way to reach the goal. But what exactly is the goal? What is your long-term solution? Should they be stored in a shed? Or should they be kept in boxes anyway? The boxes themselves are quite practical. By now we have four of them, and we also keep our garden supplies inside and scattered around the garden.

Okay, so I guess it’s really that simple. 😀 Thanks!

They are supposed to go into a box later. Then we’ll decide whether to just place them as is or buy the preferred box right away. It’s a small risk on gravel since there will be digging again.

Only buy the bins after the area is enclosed, compacted, and paved. It would be a shame if they got damaged during construction work, and you don’t actually need them yet. In case of autumn storms, you can temporarily place a paving slab on the lid if the bin is empty.

I can only strongly recommend this. Finish everything first and then purchase decorative elements like bin enclosures. Otherwise, you end up handling everything multiple times and lose a lot of time.
