ᐅ The old door frame has been removed. Does the door reveal need to be replaced?

Hello,
We want to replace the doors in our house. After removing the old door frame, I’m unsure if it’s acceptable to leave it as it is so that a new frame can be installed. I look forward to your opinions.

Since you’re asking for “opinions” rather than explicit technical reasons, that’s exactly what expanding foam was made for.

I wouldn’t do anything there at all.

No one will see it anyway, and what’s behind the door frame will never win any beauty contest.

Maybe you should check with the city archive or local chronicles to find out what has stood on this plot for at least several decades. The only “certain” thing is that it is definitely not from 1972. In which federal state is this house located?

The house dates from around 1935. The construction year was allowed to be changed because it was demolished down to the foundation walls in 1972 and rebuilt/extended.

First, please measure the internal dimensions of the door opening and share them with us.

Does a modern door frame with standard dimensions (DIN size) fit in there at all?
How wide is the jamb, meaning the side overlap?

The old door frame was plastered in. It almost looks like something from the former East Germany. Western doors don’t fit in East German door openings because those were smaller; you will need to enlarge the door size. It might be necessary to apply some plaster on the sides first so the new frame fits properly and sits flush with the wall. I wouldn’t just fill the gaps with expanding foam.

But first, send the measurements.
