Hello,
We want to replace the doors in our house. After removing the old door frame, I’m unsure if it’s acceptable to leave it as it is so that a new frame can be installed. I look forward to your opinions.

Best regards, Jens

First, measure the internal dimensions of the door opening and share them with us.

Does a modern door frame with standard dimensions (DIN size) even fit there?
How wide is the frame rebate, meaning the side overlap?

The old door frame was plastered over. It almost looks like from the former East Germany. Western doors don’t fit into those door openings because they were smaller, so you need to increase the door size. It might be necessary to add some plaster on the sides to make the new frame fit and align flush with the wall. I wouldn’t just use expanding foam for that.

But please send the measurements first.

Wall thickness including plaster 20–21cm (8–8.3 inches)
Internal dimension 90 x 200cm (35.5 x 78.7 inches)

The frames I want to order have the standard dimensions of 86 x 196 x 20cm (33.9 x 77.2 x 8 inches)

Edit: I meant frame dimensions of 86 x 198.5 x 20 cm (34 x 78 x 8 inches).

If you don’t want to plaster around the frame, the casing must have a larger reveal dimension. There are different options for this.
This means the trim on the outside needs to be wide enough to cover the old rebate of the previous frame. Otherwise, plastering is necessary.

Otherwise, the opening will fit your project without any problems.

But that quickly looks ridiculous. 10 or 12cm (4 or 5 inches) trim?

Apart from that, the opening fits your project without any issues.

Perfect. Thanks for your help and have a pleasant week.

In my opinion, that is a matter of taste. If you consider standard dimensions absolutely necessary, that may be true. I personally like to use such situations as inspiration for "standard expansions" 😉 For me, solid craftsmanship is always important; whether it looks the same elsewhere is rather secondary, or even a reason to create something new.
