Hello everyone,

I have the following question. Is it common or advisable to install the windows before applying the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS)?

Due to various delays on the construction site, my builder is considering completing this step only next year. However, he would like to have the building envelope closed by then. The windows could still be delivered and installed this year.

I have some concerns because the windows need to be sealed against the insulation that extends beyond the window frame. In my opinion, it might be difficult to achieve a proper and airtight seal when the ETICS is applied afterwards.

Is it a common practice to install the windows first and then the ETICS?

Yes, installing the windows first and then the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) is common practice and makes sense. The only disadvantage I see is that replacing the windows in the distant future can be more difficult because the frame is positioned between the rendering and the insulation system.

Okay, that already makes me somewhat more reassured. It sounded like an unusual workaround.
Is the sealing tape applied at the same time as the ETICS installation?

I think he applies the interior plaster in the reveal beforehand. In that case, the window frame would rest from the inside against the unplastered ETICS. What exactly do you mean by the render?

So, this is how it was done for us: First, the windows were installed with a compressible sealing tape (black tape), and then the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) was applied, including reinforcing mesh around the window reveals. For us, the roller shutter/blind rails were then plastered over on the outside.
