Hello fellow home builders,

we are planning a garage that is 8.18 m (internal dimension), 8.42 m (external dimension) wide for three cars. One car will rarely be used. The other two should be driven in and out daily.

I am unsure about the minimum width the garage door (sectional door) should be to comfortably fit two cars side by side. The construction company says 6 m (20 feet) is fine. I am concerned that this might be a bit tight if the door is positioned in the center.

Do you have any experience with this?

Does the gate really have to be exactly centered? That makes it more inconvenient for one of the daily-used cars unless the gate is extra wide. It’s better to position the gate off to one side so that two cars can enter and exit straight on. For the third vehicle, you just have to maneuver a bit when it needs to get out.

Depending on the width of the vehicles and how far they park from the gate, 6m (20 feet) could be enough. The two outer cars will just have to move slightly to the side each time.

The other two cars will be driven in and out daily. I’m unsure about the minimum width the sectional garage door needs to be to comfortably fit two cars side by side.

A total wall thickness of 24 cm (9.5 inches) for both exterior walls is quite tight for this span. Generally— even for three cars used equally—I would never ever consider a single wide multi-car sectional door. Furthermore, you should provide considerably more detailed information about your project, including visual aids if possible. The garage, doors, and driveway (including the terrain layout) form a system that cannot be considered piecemeal. Also, I would recommend storing a seasonal vehicle, a Sunday classic car, or a hunting vehicle separately.

A car can steer, and as long as you don’t need to drive three vehicles out of the garage at the same time, you can make the gate narrower than three parallel straight exits. The depth of the garage naturally also plays a role. It is a matter of convenience.

Hello @11ant: Why would you recommend storing the vehicles mentioned above separately?

I separate daily use vehicles from occasional ones for practical and privacy reasons. Why should the Spider get covered in pollen every time the garage door opens just so the daily driver can get through? Also, the neighbors don’t need to have an overview of the entire vehicle fleet, which would undermine the purpose of the special license plate for the recreational car—after all, it’s not owned to provoke envy in others ;-)
