ᐅ 30 x 60 cm Tiles: Practicality vs. Trendiness

Dear forum,

Our quote includes tiles in the above size at 30 euros per square meter (approximately $30 per square yard) including installation. Our general contractor has also openly mentioned that many homeowners choose a larger format. This would be significantly more expensive due to the need for a second worker, more difficult installation, and increased material usage. I find myself wavering daily between "there's no need to follow every trend" and "maybe I'll regret the smaller formats for the next 40 years."

My parents-in-law recently installed a bathroom with this size of tile, which we like very much. We have planned to use the tiles for the hallways, entrance area, kitchen, and bathrooms. Using different tiles is not an option for us.

Could you please share your experiences and feedback?

That’s a good idea, flowers don’t make you gain weight 🙂

I’ll send her chocolate flowers, great idea! Two in one 😀

For us, it’s important to show appreciation for her advice!

I’d like to bring my thread back up. Today, we casually visited “our” tile showroom to get a first impression without any pressure to decide.

Meanwhile, especially thanks to this thread, we are reviewing the dimensions and sizes of the rooms again and then deciding which measurements make sense.

I have a question about this. Our entrance area is specified as 2.51m x 7.30m (8 ft 3 in x 24 ft) in the construction scope description. I’m wondering whether 2.51m (8 ft 3 in) is just small enough for 2 tiles of 120cm (47 inches) or 4 tiles of 60cm (24 inches) wide, or if it’s already too large.

Can anyone help me with this?

How about 90 x 90cm (35 x 35 in) or something similar?

90x90 would only fit with waste from cutting.

When it comes to corridors, corners, door jamb intersections, and similar areas, you will never get the joint pattern perfectly aligned everywhere. Especially with a grid pattern, there will always be some visual disruption, so it’s better if it occurs in many places rather than just a few, making it less noticeable. The ratio of full joints to leftover joint space tends to become less favorable the larger the tile size—this is particularly noticeable with wall-parallel grid patterns. I “vote” for 60x60.

Our tiler suggested laying the tiles crosswise, 60cm long (24 inches), arranged randomly. A 10% waste allowance is already planned. At the door reveals, mosaic tiles will be used to visually continue the joints and screed transitions.
