ᐅ 30 x 60 cm Tiles: Practicality vs. Trendiness

Dear forum,

Our quote includes tiles in the above size at 30 euros per square meter (approximately $30 per square yard) including installation. Our general contractor has also openly mentioned that many homeowners choose a larger format. This would be significantly more expensive due to the need for a second worker, more difficult installation, and increased material usage. I find myself wavering daily between "there's no need to follow every trend" and "maybe I'll regret the smaller formats for the next 40 years."

My parents-in-law recently installed a bathroom with this size of tile, which we like very much. We have planned to use the tiles for the hallways, entrance area, kitchen, and bathrooms. Using different tiles is not an option for us.

Could you please share your experiences and feedback?

A) Because the topic is ... versus the spirit of the times, and these small tiles do reflect a style, but one from the distant past. It’s not a style from this millennium. No criticism intended, no resentment. Just a fact.

B) I could also say old-fashioned or outdated. Synonyms for old-fashioned. And again, that’s not a criticism but a simple fact.

And in the end, as I also wrote, it’s a matter of personal taste.
Actually, the tiles are making a comeback, maybe not so much on floors but as eye-catching features on walls. They aren’t old-fashioned but modern again ;-)

Do you already have a tile installer? Especially when your tile installer hears 120 x 280 🙂
We had the experience back then that only a few were willing or able to install large format tiles.
For 100 x 150, they need two people to lift the tiles. That also increases the cost accordingly...

We are building with a general contractor. We mentioned larger formats. He said these are not a problem, but we should expect additional costs per square meter and for installation. It definitely doesn’t have to be 120 x 280. 🙂

What kind of surface finish do you have in mind? Matte, right? And then smooth or more textured?
How expensive are the two?

We liked matte with a textured surface. So not a solid color, but with a slight pattern.

Prices include VAT.
Favorite tile 1: thickness 9mm (0.35 inches), slip resistance class 10
60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches) = €39.21
30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inches) = €35.64

Favorite tile 2: thickness 10mm (0.39 inches), slip resistance class R10/A
45 x 90 cm (18 x 35 inches) = €49.86
30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inches) = €41.53
60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches) = €47.48

In both cases, there don’t seem to be larger formats available. At least none were indicated.

Take a look at the Atlas Concorde tiles; they also offer similar options in all sizes.

Here is an update: After a lot of reading here and discussing with my wife, I visited the tile studio again today.
There, the consultant clearly dashed my plan of using the same tile throughout the entire house, with larger formats in highlight rooms and smaller formats in lowlight rooms.

He explained that “people” usually choose one tile size and use it consistently throughout the house. At most, the bathroom walls might have a different size, but even that is uncommon. His reasoning was that tiles in different sizes are fired differently and therefore don’t match well together. I had our floor plans with me and responded that I understood his point, but in our case, it only applies once that two tiled rooms are next to each other. He didn’t really take that into account. According to him, we would notice the difference throughout the entire house.

How did you handle it? One tile size for the whole house or varied sizes?
Do you agree with this rule and the reasoning behind it?

Nonsense. That is a matter of personal taste.
