Hello,
what is your opinion on buying recycled crushed stone for the house’s foundation slab? We need to overcome a relatively large height (1.2 m (4 feet)), and this could save a considerable amount of money. So far, I have heard mixed opinions but no real explanations.

We do not have an expert report, as yellow sand appears from 40cm (16 inches) down. I was told that this is ideal building ground. We then placed and compacted the removed topsoil in layers with 500 tons (about 297 cubic meters) of RC (recycled) concrete with 0/45 aggregate size. Costs here are €10.45 per cubic meter (net). Carried out as a DIY job, and a family member who is a civil engineer should have given good advice. 🙂

Sometimes it’s good if the gravel pit is just a few kilometers away. I already pay €11.5 per cubic meter for pickup myself.H

€10.45 was just for materials, we picked everything up ourselves over 27 trips from a distance of 3m (10 feet). 🙂I filled in 50–60cm (20–24 inches) of fill sand on top of gravel soil, around 500 tons (metric) in total. My excavation contractor (who, funny enough, is also a family member) gave the same advice: compact in layers and water thoroughly, and then everything will be perfect. For terraces, driveways, etc., I then got another 200 tons (metric) of recycled concrete.
