Since we are also planning to install shutters at some point (=on the finished house), may I ask how yours operate? Electrically, with a crank, or traditionally by hand – and how much effort was involved? Did you do it yourselves as well?

We decided to install the shutters as decorative only. It’s the north side, so shading is not necessary here. However, we always wanted to enhance the entrance area visually. The other windows on the house do not have shutters. From a shading perspective, we don’t need them—after living without for 4 years, it works very well. The south side has a large covered patio that provides the necessary shade.
Installing the shutters as decoration was a bit fiddly but still relatively simple. Each consists of two diamond-shaped wooden slats interlocking.

Beautiful! I would love to have some too. May I ask what you paid the carpenter?

Sometimes I feel like not all shade is the same. I prefer the shade of trees over that of a sun umbrella. This is not just a feeling, but a fact, since trees create their own microclimate and the shade under them feels cooler not only subjectively. A sun umbrella is almost like an indoor roller blind: the light is blocked, but it still radiates heat downward.
