ᐅ Are Internal Roof Gutters Problematic?

Dear Forum,

We are currently planning our new build with internal downpipes. Our architect has planned for these to pass through the external insulation at four points. We recently spoke with our roofer, who has limited experience with this but warned that in case of material defects, moisture could penetrate the masonry unnoticed. What are your experiences and opinions on this?

Strange… Personally, I would (probably) like it 😀 At least, I wouldn’t reject this trend if it were to come. Provided they are - and remain - watertight.

My parents' house, built in 1970, had no significant problems with internal downpipes over 51 years, as far as I can remember.
Technically, this is not an issue. In case of damage, however, repairs are more complex, and the question is also when and how you recognize a problem.
We also wanted to build this way but were convinced of the purpose and benefits of a large roof overhang. The downpipes are not particularly attractive, but they are also not an eyesore.

Yes, for aesthetic reasons we are currently planning it that way. It would be interesting to know if this poses a significant risk.
However, this breaks the external insulation significantly at these points. The insulation will then be only minimal. Has the energy consultant approved this?

Otherwise, it carries the same level of risk as all internal pipes. And wastewater pipes have been installed inside walls for over 100 years.

Underfloor heating pipes are hidden as well. Just imagine if there was a leak there 😱

Could there possibly be problems in winter when everything freezes?

You know, I actually like that too. But not everything that looks nice is a) practical and b) a must-have.

It is absolutely not a problem if done correctly.
We use welded smooth pipes with a leak test…
