ᐅ Which wall assembly is suitable for being vapor-permeable?

Hello everyone,

I am currently researching wall construction with a focus on vapor-open systems. I am very concerned about mold growth in the house, which is why I have often read that a vapor-open build is preferable (using a vapor retarder instead of a vapor barrier). However, when I look at the wall constructions of various manufacturers, a vapor barrier is often installed rather than a retarder (for example, Danwood). If the mechanical ventilation system fails, does this then inevitably lead to mold growth? Can anyone share their experience with how this (PE foil) actually performs in a house? Are there wall constructions where a mechanical ventilation system is installed as a nice-to-have but not essential? We currently live in an apartment and have to air the rooms multiple times in winter to prevent mold from forming under the blinds’ boxes. Are there houses or walls that do not experience these problems? We definitely want a ventilation system, but I would like to avoid the worry of mold growth within a few days if the system fails.

Thank you very much for your experiences.

I’m curious whether owners of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery have less dust or lint buildup?

We still do some work on the house from time to time, but the interior is basically finished now. Because the exterior area is not yet completed, we still hang laundry indoors. However, a lot of dust and bluish lint accumulates.

I completely agree with @Nordlys. What you don’t have can’t break. We monitor the indoor humidity with sensors, and occasionally the bathroom goes above 60%, but with the extractor fan and manual window ventilation, it quickly goes back down.

Yes!!!
It’s been fantastic, and I’m already looking forward to summer in the new house with a controlled ventilation system. Allergy sufferers will appreciate it as well. I only have mild hay fever (grass pollen), but even that feels much better with the right filter in place, especially at night in the bedroom.

We’re still doing some work in the house now and then, but the interior is basically finished. We still hang laundry indoors because the exterior landscaping isn’t done yet. But a lot of dust settles, as well as these “bluish lint particles.”

I don’t have controlled mechanical ventilation myself, but I can well imagine it: having such a system doesn’t magically turn a house into a “clean room.” Particles are still present, and air movements—caused for example by sunlight heating—still occur, so dust is there and gets stirred up. Depending on the size of the filter pores, it’s quite possible that the “composition” of the particles differs compared to what you were used to with the previous “natural ventilation” ;-) You therefore might see more lint if the remaining lint particles are mostly bluish ;-)

Without controlled residential ventilation and basically without lint. However, we also have little upholstery and carpet, mostly tiles, vinyl, and leather.

Good morning everyone,

I just wanted to quickly ask if anyone has experience with the decentralized ventilators from Viessmann vitovent 100-d???

They sound and look very good, but does it also work well in practice?

It’s not much cheaper than a central system, but I find the concept very appealing.

Thanks!

Personally, I am not in favor of decentralized ventilators at all. Either controlled residential ventilation with heat recovery or window rebate ventilation.

A house is planned carefully to avoid thermal bridges, and then several core drillings are made to install poorly insulated fans? To me, that is contradictory.
