Hi,

my wife and I are just starting our project to build our own detached single-family house. The plot of land is already secured, and now we are working on the floor plan design.

I would like to model our ideas in a floor planning software in 3D, as this helps to better visualize things and get a clearer impression compared to sketches on paper.

However, this is not about creating a final model like an architect would do. Therefore, I am not looking for a professional high-end tool, but rather something that allows simple rough modeling to brainstorm ideas.

Which software would you recommend for this? Thanks for your suggestions!

Once you have your plan, simply build the whole thing as a model using thin wood. I found it great, and for the kids it was like a dollhouse they could start furnishing themselves. Better than any drawing.
The Lego method is less complicated 🙂

floorplanner 3D is also nice for experimenting.

Honestly, it’s not. You won’t get it as accurately to scale. And you can’t as easily remove the first or second floor. Plus, painting Legos is also not ideal.
Our house back then had a floor plan of 50cm by 50cm (20 inches by 20 inches)

LOL... It's about planning, not finalizing or building a model. And planning works perfectly well with Lego 😉

Here are a few examples from Sweet Home 3D. I used it for our planning. We are still impressed today by how accurately SH3D represented the final reality.

Bright bathroom with glass shower, sink, mirror, plants, and window.

A woman cooking in a bright kitchen; sink on the left, stove on the right, shelves and living room in the background.

Open kitchen with sink, kitchen island, plant, refrigerator, and bookshelf in the living room.

Modern kitchen with white cabinets, oven, sink; cat next to the oven; fruit on the island.

Wow. I’ve been planning with SH3D for quite a while now and have even created and imported some furniture myself. However, I keep struggling with the rendered images, which never look good to me. I strongly suspect that I need to adjust something with the lighting because the areas around the windows look fine, but the rest becomes very grainy. Do you have any tips for me? Your images look incredibly good.
