Hello everyone,
My wife and I started building our own home last year. A friend pointed out that I need to install a water filtration system for a new build. My question is: Do you have any experience with this? Does the filter have to meet specific requirements? My thinking is: If I have to install it anyway, I might as well do it properly and get a water filter that can really remove all contaminants. (Possibly for future children.) I would really appreciate any ideas, suggestions, or advice!
Greetings from Ostwestfalen,
Christian

Especially when it comes to my children, I am concerned about nitrate contamination. There are limits set for that as well, which in Germany tend to be quite conservative. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.C
Chris_Steifen20 Jan 2021 14:01It's not about the dirt for me, but mainly about the microplastics, which definitely are not preventative when it comes to allergies. However, I do understand both of your points and will give it some more thought. Thanks a lot for your time already 🙂
I am only familiar with public buildings where a water test is carried out after installing the drinking water supply. Is it the same for single-family houses?
Because yes, German drinking water is of good quality, but where is the testing point? At the water treatment plant? Or at my home tap?

However, you can always commission a laboratory to test your tap water.
It costs about 100 euros.
@Chris_Steifen Again, where exactly do you expect microplastics in your drinking water to come from?
The water from treatment plants mostly comes from groundwater wells and is not connected to surface water.
If you are concerned about plastic, do you also only use glass bottles?

We installed a filter in our house, specifically for limescale, as we have quite hard water. Since we were planning to get a water softening system anyway, we also looked into the topic a bit more. Opinions on this vary widely and are very polarized. In the end, we decided not to filter out more than just the limescale, as overly "purified" water is said to be unhealthy—meaning if you remove all minerals and everything else as well. Additionally, the more filters you install, the higher the chance that these filters can become clogged with germs.

In the end, we decided not to filter out more than just the limescale, because drinking overly “purified” water isn’t considered healthy either—meaning if you remove all minerals and everything else as well. Also, the more filters you install, the more they can become breeding grounds for germs. What kind of “filter” did you install against limescale? Actually, only water softeners are really effective, but they come with high installation, maintenance, and salt costs. The salt used also burdens wastewater and changes the water quality...
