Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding a symbol in the draft plans of our house. Unfortunately, there is no explanation for it in the plan legend, and I couldn't find anything about it online either.
What exactly does the symbol (half black, half white with a 45° arrow, rising from left to right) next to the drain "S5" mean?
The toilet and sink apparently share the same drain, which is then located in the wall at the toilet.
I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me.

To explain the diagram:
Upward arrow – the pipe passes upward through the floor slab.
DD = floor penetration, 18/18 = dimensions of the penetration.
So in this case, a pipe starts from this floor and goes upward through the floor slab via the opening.
This would actually be the vent pipe, as stated in the explanation for DD.
If there was a downward arrow, it would mean a pipe starts here and runs downward.
If the arrow does not break through the circle, it indicates a pure starting point of a riser or pipe, usually without a floor penetration at this point.
For S5, I assume S stands for riser and all riser pipes have been numbered sequentially.
Best regards,
Jann I see it differently.
This symbol represents a continuous vertical riser. It comes from the floor below and continues to the floor above. The symbol starts just below the penetration you correctly described.
I am always surprised by what some experts in my field draw. Primarily, this should simply be a soil and waste stack that is vented upward through the roof. If this is the top floor, the following symbol would be more appropriate and clearer.
Yes, that's correct. I initially planned to write more concretely that we are probably on the first floor and that the stack runs through, but I thought this information was enough and understandable. Therefore, below is an explanation of how it looks when the stack does not run through.
I find this style of drawing quite normal. This is how they always look here, no matter which architect or specialist planner created them.
Best regards

The symbol is placed on a pipe on the ground floor, and it is vented through the roof.
