Hello everyone, we are considering drilling a well ourselves or having it done for garden irrigation. We would need to go about 12-15 meters (39-49 feet) deep. What costs should we expect if we do it ourselves or hire someone?

Hi,

It always depends on the local conditions. Here, a well including a check valve costs around 350€.

For your location, I would estimate about 500€, considering the depth.

Up to 10m (33 feet) flat rate around 800€. In addition, a water rights permit/planning permission costs 200€, plus a pump for 100-200€, and possibly an electrician.
You can probably drill manually up to about 10m (33 feet), but it requires some physical strength. Otherwise, you can rent a machine, which is also possible. I watched some videos on YouTube about it, and it’s not a big deal.

We decided not to do it, but the neighbors have. For that amount, I can supply the garden for many years using the outdoor water meter. However, since it’s drinking water, I do feel some moral hesitation.

Wow, what kind of ground do you have? This is strictly about a small well for a domestic water system and not a deep well pump, right?

The quote for a percussion drilling was similar for us, around €800 for 8m (26 feet), plus the pump.

We also lacked competition. The well driller declined, as they only take on larger projects. The offer then came from the company that also carried out the geotechnical survey.

At 15 meters (49 feet), you cannot construct a driven well but must have a hole drilled and then insert a pipe with a minimum diameter of 110mm (4.3 inches). It would be even better to use a slightly larger diameter. After that, a submersible deep well pump should be used. Therefore, I am now assuming costs well above 1000 €.
