Hello!
My girlfriend and I would like to build a house.
We already have a plot of land, so the 180,000€ is only for the house itself.
Our rough idea is:

- about 140m² (1,507 sq ft) of living space
- no basement
- gable roof
- garage
- medium-level interior finishing

We have many skilled tradespeople in the family who can help, so we can contribute a lot of work ourselves.

- Masonry for the shell construction (my father and uncle have already built 3 houses)
- Installing roof battens and roofing
- Installing interior doors
- Flooring (except tiles in the bathrooms)
- Wallpapering

These are the tasks we want to do ourselves. Because I work in 24-hour shifts, I have a lot of free time—24 hours working, then 48 hours off. We can also count on experienced helpers, like my father, who built his own house about 20 years ago. However, he couldn’t give exact information about building material prices because much has changed since then.

What do you think—would this be possible? Are there any forum members who have managed to build within this budget?

No, unfortunately that is not possible because from the 180,000 thousand, additional construction-related costs of 30,000 to 50,000 will still have to be deducted. The remaining amount will hardly be enough, probably not even for a shell house plus finishing materials.

Calculate 1,800 per square meter (1,800 per square yard) of living space, plus additional construction-related costs, garage, exterior work, flooring, and painting.

That will indeed be difficult.
We have already found a relatively affordable house, and just the house itself costs 180,000 euros.
This price does not include any notary fees, landscaping, electricity, water, sewage connection, earthworks, or various authorities that also require payment, nor the architect’s fees for surveying.
Sure, I’m in Austria, but still, there are many additional costs that you often don’t even think about.
Yvonne (user ypg) has written a great article that explains a lot of this.
Yvonne, could you please share a link to it?

Let’s wait, there will still be some who say it’s possible for that amount of money! However, they have yet to provide any proof. Considering that, 180,000 is not a small sum.

140 m² (1500 ft²) to 180 minus 40 for additional costs results in a construction price of 1000 per m² (93 per ft²) ... ambitious. You should ask a local builder if you have a chance. This forum is certainly not the place for reliable information.
