ᐅ Insulation of Basement Ceiling with Mineral Wool – How to Install

Hello. I have a house with a full basement.
Currently, there is no insulation applied, so the boards are directly visible.
I have now received quite a few stone wool boards with a thickness of 60mm (2.4 inches) as a gift.
These boards are coated on both sides with a firmer white material to allow the boards to be glued directly to the ceiling.

The problem is the ceiling height.
60mm (2.4 inches) is too thick for me. I would have to cut the boards in half, so to 30mm (1.2 inches), to still be able to walk around (unfortunately, very low ceiling height).

However, after cutting them in half, the white coating would be removed, so I would have to glue the stone wool directly to the ceiling.

I would cut them with a pruning saw with a good guide to keep the cut surface even.

Does anyone have experience with this?
Best regards, Herbert

10cm (4 inches) PUR (thermal conductivity 0.025 W/(m·K), foil-faced) has a U-value of 0.235 W/(m²K). Nonwoven-faced (thermal conductivity 0.028 W/(m·K)) would have 0.261.
14cm (5.5 inches) mineral wool (thermal conductivity 0.040 W/(m·K)) has 0.266 W/(m²K).

Can this be used as 100mm (4 inches) insulation for the basement and upper floor ceilings? Is that sufficient?

I’m just stating my opinion, but I’m not an expert. Maybe it’s worth asking the energy consultant again.

Well, my Google still works. Is yours broken? Using search terms like "pur pir 2nd choice" together gives an almost perfect result.

I usually go to Dämmstoffkönig or Smartbau in Nettetal, depending on what I need. From PUR/PIR foam to mineral wool and resol foam. You should look it up online – I’m not allowed to post links.

Yes, I found those two as well. But the trip isn’t really worth it; it’s not that much cheaper. It would be about 150 km (93 miles) each way.

Calling roughly half the regular online price “not that cheap”? LOL – I’m at a loss for words.

Sure, compared to free it’s definitely more expensive (and bulkier). That’s true and I get that. Overall, though, these are amazing prices for a product where you often don’t even notice why it’s second grade.

But in return, you get insulation, not homeopathy like with your originally planned 30mm (1.2 inch) mineral wool. The 100mm (4 inch) PIR also brings your basement ceiling roughly up to a KfW55 basement ceiling standard, which of course makes a huge difference.
