ᐅ Trail camera or: who’s stealing my hazelnuts :)

I have been trying for some time to attract a squirrel with hazelnuts. A squirrel feeding station didn’t work, and I’m not sure if it was because it was in the wrong place or if the little animal just couldn’t figure out the feeder.
For the past few days, I have simply been scattering hazelnuts on the ground in various spots. Most of them have now disappeared. However, I suspect the theft might be happening at night. If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be a squirrel. Since I don’t want to unintentionally attract rats, martens, or who knows what else, my question is: who could it be? Does anyone here have a wildlife camera?
I would be interested in one for other reasons too, but the models that actually perform well according to tests cost at least 120 EUR. I wasn’t planning on spending that much.

Hello Wickie

Once a food source is found, rats are very persistent. My bird suet balls are regularly stolen. The rat simply bites through the hanging string. They also come regularly for the hedgehog food sooner or later. Set up a tipping trap and the problem is solved. Once, I caught a young hedgehog in such a tipping trap. No problem. It is a live trap. Just release the hedgehog and that’s it.

The squirrel was just here and searched exactly where I usually put the nuts. But since there were no nuts left, it ran away again. I’ve put some more nuts out now. Let’s see if they disappear during the day as well.

A camera has also been ordered, so hopefully I’ll be able to see who the thief is at dusk or during the night.

So. The thief has inadvertently revealed itself! A little mouse!
All the nuts that were left out in the open were gone again this morning, and in the squirrel feeder (one with a lid that the squirrels manage to open by themselves), the mouse was sitting inside, looking at me with wide eyes.
Before locking itself in there, it had actually taken all the nuts out... probably around 20 pieces!
So it was definitely busy, oops:

She probably thought it was already Christmas.

Dormice are nocturnal. It seems like one is living at our neighbor’s place and stealing. Please share a picture if you have one. They are so cute.

See above #16 – the culprit has already been identified. A little mouse.
