Hello everyone,

I have noticed that my IKEA Malm bed occasionally squeaks, which is quite annoying, especially at night. My question is: Why does the Malm bed sometimes squeak?

I have the impression that the noise occurs both when turning over and when getting up. It doesn’t seem constant but happens sporadically. The bed is made from a combination of engineered wood and has metal reinforcements.

I have checked it several times; all screws are tight, and the bed is stable—yet it still squeaks occasionally.

Does anyone know the most common causes of squeaking for this type of bed or have tips on how to stop it permanently? Maybe there are mechanical or structural factors to consider?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Take a look under the slatted bed bases, as that is often where the squeaking comes from. Simply remove the slatted base and check if any slats or the frame are damaged.

If not, place felt pads as a buffer between the frame and the slatted bases. This usually stops the squeaking effectively.

This is brilliant, so many tips coming together here! 🙂

I had the same problem with my Malm, and the squeaking almost drove me crazy!

My trick was to loosen all the screws, then apply a thin wax layer to all the connecting parts. That helped incredibly well! I also added felt pads to the underside of the slats.

The result? No more squeaking noises at all!

So keep your chin up, with a bit of patience you can fix this! 🙂

This is an effective measure. Wax or paraffin significantly reduces friction. However, it is advisable to apply the wax selectively to avoid long-term damage to the wood.

I would add:
- Moisture control in the room, as fluctuations affect the materials
- Checking the choice of slatted frame / bed base: a suitable slatted frame reduces stress

In summary: Squeaking can often be resolved through a combination of mechanical maintenance and environmental control.
