After receiving rough estimates for an ETICS (external thermal insulation composite system), the decision was clear: I will install the cladding myself again to save costs.
After extensive research, I came across a type of brick that I’ve seen before but have not worked with myself: calcium silicate design bricks 4 DF with chamfer (thin-bed mortar). I have already adjusted the plan to fit an eighth of a meter modular system to reduce cutting. I have built several houses with calcium silicate bricks 2 DF but have never glued a facing brick, especially not a 4 DF with chamfer.
Compared to other facing bricks, this one is relatively affordable (around 1100 € per thousand plus VAT). Required quantity per square meter: 16 pieces. This results in a price of about 21 € per m² (including VAT). Special shapes and custom parts are not too expensive (relative to the standard brick).
I have a few questions about this brick:
Has anyone here worked with this brick before? (It seems very rare: according to the manufacturer, only 5 reference houses exist in all of northern Germany.)
How do I attach the ventilation grilles to the weather-resistant membrane (breather membrane)? Do I have to cut every second brick? Should I omit the ventilation or do I need special shaped bricks for the ventilation?
Which bricks are recommended for the courses above window sills (rowlock courses)? The also chamfered 2 DF bricks?
