Hello everyone, I’m currently planning to assemble a new Billy shelf and was wondering which screws are actually better than the standard fasteners provided by IKEA. The original screws are usually simple chipboard screws, which I personally don’t find ideal in terms of durability and load capacity.
I’m especially interested in whether there are screws that are better suited for the engineered wood materials used in Billy shelves – specifically, the best combination of material, length, and thread type. I would also appreciate advice regarding strength and load-bearing capacity! Who has experience with effective and long-lasting alternatives?

Regarding Tause: To my knowledge, there are no scientific comparisons specifically for IKEA Billy screws, but experience from woodworking is clear.
It all depends on the right combination: the screw material (corrosion-resistant), length, diameter, and of course the thread profile (fine threads are useful for chipboard).
In addition, I recommend pre-drilling the holes before screwing in to avoid splitting the material and to ensure better durability.

Additionally, I recommend pre-drilling the holes before screwing inThanks, that’s a helpful tip! What drill bit diameter would you suggest in relation to the screw size? I usually skip pre-drilling with the original screws, but when using different screws, I think it makes more sense.
I’m also curious whether any of you prefer specific screw types like Torx, since they often allow higher torque transfer without damaging the screw head?

Unlike Phillips screws, they don’t cam out, which extends the life of the installation and improves stability. If you often assemble medium or larger shelves at home, this is definitely the way to go.
Regarding pilot holes: you should use a drill bit about 70 to 80% of the screw’s diameter so the threads hold well without splitting the wood.
