Hi,
I am currently planning my interior finishing.
Now I am wondering which flush-mount boxes are the right ones:
When should I use airtight flush-mount boxes and when are “normal” ones sufficient? Or can I generally skip the airtight ones?
My wall structure (interior wall) consists of 10/12 cm (4–5 inches) KVH framing + 15 mm (0.6 inches) OSB + 12.5 mm (0.5 inches) drywall – OSB and drywall obviously on both sides.
The exterior walls have a 6 cm (2.4 inches) installation cavity + 15 mm (0.6 inches) OSB + 12.5 mm (0.5 inches) drywall.
With this wall setup, would you generally recommend boxes with a depth of 61/62 mm (2.4 inches) or are 47 mm (1.9 inches) boxes sufficient?
I tend to prefer the deeper boxes, but am I overlooking any disadvantages here?
Thanks and best regards
Chris

One thing to consider in special locations are multimedia boxes, like the Kaiser 1068, which can also house some additional electronics. How do you get the bulky unit through the opening for the flush-mounted box?

HeimatBauer13 Dec 2023 15:14Admittedly, I built them into the wall; in drywall, I only installed standard boxes. But I understood the shape to be designed so that it just barely fits through with a bit of force.
Kaiser 1068 would not be suitable – for drywall partitions, the Kaiser 9268-94 version should be used instead. This one has a flexible tunnel that is pressed in during installation and then stretched back inside. It works fairly well (as long as there is no beam in the way, see above), but the tunnel is not very durable – it should not be disassembled and reinstalled too often.

HeimatBauer13 Dec 2023 18:42Thanks to Harakiri for mentioning the correct box; mine is only for flush-mounted installation.
The tunnel also seems smaller to me – on one hand understandable and better than nothing, but on the other hand, my SBC with all the cables probably wouldn’t have fit in. So make sure to do a test fit beforehand!

Definitely a tight fit. I installed fairly compact KNX actuators myself, but even then it was quite close (especially including WAGO terminal blocks). If any manufacturer offers larger models (I think OBO has something similar), it’s definitely worth comparing and possibly switching.
