I believe that regular, but not excessive, maintenance really works wonders. I use a mild furniture care spray specially designed for veneered surfaces and apply it once every 4 months. It works great and always keeps the finish looking fresh!
Tip for dealing with small scratches: a bit of furniture polish in the matching wood color can work wonders. Just gently rub it in and then wipe off with a soft cloth. Feel free to give it a try before buying something more expensive!
