ᐅ Which mounting screws are best suited for IKEA Metod cabinets made of aluminum?

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a project to assemble an IKEA Metod kitchen unit using aluminum profiles. I have a question: Which mounting screws are best suited to securely and permanently connect the aluminum components?

Here is the background: I have read that standard wood or chipboard screws are not ideal for metal, as they can damage the material or fail to provide enough grip. At the same time, the screws need to be corrosion-resistant because the kitchen is exposed to a certain level of humidity.

I am therefore looking for screws that are specifically compatible with the aluminum profiles used in Metod, with the appropriate dimensions and ideally offering good load distribution to avoid deforming the material. Are there any experiences, recommendations, or advice regarding the type of screws, screw length, thread type, or surface treatment?

Thank you in advance for your tips!

Elise, if you like, I can also recommend specific model numbers for you.

Thank you for your detailed feedback, bapar. To be honest, I hadn’t even considered the issue with the rivet nuts before.

I actually drilled the profiles myself since there were no pre-made threads. Therefore, I plan to use metric fine thread screws in M4 or M5, of course matching the aluminum thickness of about 2 mm (0.08 inches).

A specific recommendation for screw models would be great. I’m also curious whether you would recommend any special coatings in case I need to exclude stainless steel for cost reasons. Galvanized options are, as far as I know, cheaper, but I’m not sure how critical that is for aluminum.

What about using washers or other load-distributing elements? Has anyone had good experience with these?

Looking forward to more input!
