ᐅ Where to live during the house construction?

Hello everyone,

I am new here and at the beginning of the building planning phase.
We currently live on a 900m² (9,688 sq ft) plot with an old house. Our current plan is to demolish the house and build a new one.
The question I'm facing right now is: where do my partner, dog, I, and our belongings stay during that time?

Does anyone have tips, experiences, or similar advice? I am concerned that this might even be the main obstacle.

Thanks and best regards!

I would store household belongings temporarily. Mobile homes came to mind. Alternatively, you can also rent individual container units like those used for construction workers, as they are not only available as entire "villages." Rural guesthouses with, to put it mildly, low occupancy could also be an option. Construction can be done in phases, for example, if the existing house still occupies the space intended for a terrace, sunroom, or garage. Two people and a dog does not exactly suggest a large mansion, so construction time is relative. A prefabricated house without a basement can be completed fairly quickly. A one-and-a-half-story solid construction in an L-shape with a bay window, a clipped gable roof, and a full basement will take longer.

What speaks against a regular rental apartment?

I am with willo. We had a rental agreement, which was sold on March 16. We are currently renting until September 10, then we will move. The house we are renting now was sold with the ownership transfer on September 1. Moving at the end of September wouldn’t be a problem either, but it probably won’t be necessary. We were a bit lucky because the previous owner was happy about this interim rental to us with a clear end date, so we didn’t interfere with the sale. In return, he offered us a fair rent of 800 including utilities. Our monthly payment for the new build will be similar at 745. So, nothing will change much. You might want to look for something like this. I asked at the local chapter of Haus und Grund if they had a member who preferred a fixed-term rental agreement, and as you can see, they helped. Thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to keep the house standing and build at the same time. Our plot is too narrow for that.
So the only option left is the apartment, which hopefully can be found with a dog as well.
Best regards
