We want to border our property with a hedge towards the neighbors.

But what is the perfect shrub/tree for this?

Desirable characteristics:
- evergreen throughout the year
- dense coverage year-round for privacy
- moderate growth rate, so it doesn’t require constant pruning, but also not too slow
- low maintenance
- attractive color and foliage

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you in advance :-)

I don’t know of a plant that does everything perfectly. To stay green and provide privacy all year round, only Thuja and similar evergreens really qualify. However, these tend to grow quite fast. Also, in my opinion, they look very plain and a bit tacky. 😉

One of the easiest hedge plants to maintain is the spirea shrub (Spiraea arguta). It doesn’t grow endlessly tall—usually it stays around 2-3m (6.5-10 feet). In summer, it has many small leaves and provides good privacy. It flowers beautifully in white. Think about why you really need privacy in winter. Are you winter swimmers?

If you’re a nature lover, the best choice is to plant a wildlife-friendly hedge with various native shrubs. You can usually find lists from your local conservation authority. Then the bird feeder and nest box will work well together. 🙂

Although I haven’t started building or gardening yet, I’ve shortlisted two hedge options:
- Cornus mas (Cornelian cherry), a wildlife garden plant for birds and insects, blooms March/April, fruits are edible (Vitamin C), prefers sunny locations, ideal for stabilizing slopes. Not evergreen, but if planted densely, it can still provide privacy in winter.
- Rosehip, a wildlife garden plant for birds, blooms in autumn.

Hornbeam green.
Copper beech red.
Resilient, bird-friendly. Slow growing. Good for dense planting. Affordable. (A shrub costs about 2.00 euros in horticulture)
