Hello everyone, I am currently considering which type of handles are the better choice for an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit: the original handles from IKEA or alternatives from other manufacturers, or custom-designed handles.

I am interested not only in the appearance but also in functionality, durability, and ease of installation. Additionally, I would like to know how changing the handles affects the overall longevity of the shelving unit, especially with frequent use. Does anyone have experience with special materials or designs that work well with the KALLAX? I look forward to your insights and practical tips!

I used leather strap handles as an alternative for my KALLAX shelf – it looks really unique and feels comfortable to hold.

Of course, it’s not quite as durable as plastic, but with some care, they last for a long time.

With alternative handles, you might need to redrill holes – which weakens the material
I can confirm that, especially if you frequently make changes or replacements. My tip: pre-drill with a small drill bit and avoid making the holes too large.

Thank you for the lively discussion so far! I find the tips on redrilling and load capacity before replacement especially helpful.

I’m curious if anyone has experience with alternative handles that make installation just as easy as the originals? Possibly with the same dimensions but a different appearance?

Is the lower durability of alternative designs a concern for a standard living room shelf with moderate use, or is it only relevant for heavy loads and constant use? I appreciate your insights!
