Hello everyone, I am currently thinking about how to customize my IKEA Brimnes furniture a bit more, as it feels too plain and standard to me right now. Does anyone have creative DIY ideas to enhance this series and break up its appearance? I am interested in examples of how to make the furniture more personal with a manageable effort and simple methods – for example, new handles, painting, surface finishing, or other modifications. It is important to me that the result remains practical and does not require a huge time investment. Has anyone had experience with this or any specific suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I believe the true DIY spirit goes beyond simple tweaking; it’s about questioning the entire design language and function.

That’s a very good point. Especially with Brimnes, which are modular and minimalist, it makes sense to also adapt the function. For example:

- Adding extra drawers or plywood inserts customized and glued in to create better organization
- Replacing part of the back panel with a metal grid instead of a simple chipboard panel to support an industrial style
- Attaching legs to lift the main body off the floor

One shouldn’t underestimate that these modifications can be somewhat challenging depending on tools and materials. I always wonder if the final result, in terms of style and usefulness, justifies the effort.

Lassejon, what do you value more – pure aesthetics or also function?
