ᐅ What costs can we expect for the design work from the structural engineer?

KMuellerHello!
We are planning to build a single-family house and have requested some quotes. We also consulted a structural engineer who made three sketches. Two were his ideas, and the third was a sketch I provided, which he then professionally redrew. So far, nothing else has happened, and no cost estimates have been provided.
What costs should we approximately expect? We have not signed anything yet but have had email exchanges regarding the designs and two meetings.
Thank you very much for your help!

You must have at least discussed what the basis for him actually agreeing to draw the plans was: were these proposals submitted as part of a bid for an actual contract, or did you instruct him to create plans or sketches?
In principle, contracts do not necessarily have to be made in writing; even saying “Waiter, a coffee please” constitutes a contract for delivery. As far as I know, the fee schedule for architects and engineers covers services generally, without distinguishing between those provided by architects or engineers. But—whether verbally or in writing—some basis for his actions must have been established.
If he only submitted the sketches as part of a bid for a design contract and you did not use them, I don’t see why there should be any costs. However, such matters should be clarified in advance.
