Hello everyone,
I have been using IKEA Billy shelves for some time now, but I’ve been experiencing several issues such as uneven load capacity, unstable edges, and significant sagging over the full shelf width. Therefore, I’m very interested in knowing: What alternatives to Billy shelves are available when these problems occur frequently? I’m specifically looking for solutions that are more stable, possibly modular, and offer better long-term quality in terms of materials. Maybe someone knows of comparable shelving systems or stores that offer more robust products with similar flexibility? I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice!

It’s great that you’re looking for alternatives! 🙂 For your situation, I can only suggest checking out solid wood shelves made by local carpenters. They are very sturdy, look fantastic, and last a long time!
Last year, I ordered a solid wood shelf that can easily hold a whole bunch of heavy photo frames and boxes without any problem. It also looks great next to the sofa.
By the way, I have had good experiences with shelves from the “Hemnes” series at IKEA – they are more stable than the BILLY shelves and have thicker shelves. That might be worth a try! Good luck finding your perfect shelf!

Additionally, I recommend paying attention to the material thickness and the method of securing the back panel when choosing shelves. Often, the importance of wall mounting is underestimated, but anchoring screws into masonry significantly improve stability.
Another alternative is the shelving systems from String, which are not only very functional but also modular. Their load capacity can be increased with additional components. Especially in living areas, they offer an elegant yet durable solution.
