ᐅ Using an Old Swimming Pool as a Rainwater Cistern?

Dear all,

On a property that we are likely to purchase, there is an old pool that would normally be removed during demolition and clearing. Now I have been thinking about whether it could instead be buried and used as a cistern with a cover on top (what material would be suitable?).

What are your thoughts? What else should be considered?

Best regards

Even for just water for plants, I would avoid an inappropriate volume. A stagnant, unventilated puddle will not be a source of enjoyment.

I always find ponds problematic because of mosquitoes. On the other hand, we had considered Muscovy ducks. However, I doubt that’s practical on 500 m² (approximately 5,400 ft²).

You can even rent Muscovy ducks during snail and mosquito season. Dragonflies that settle near the pond helped us with mosquitoes. They’re attractive and also have a sufficient food source.

Okay, that was just an idea anyway.

What would be an appropriate volume for about 300m² (3,230 ft²) of planted garden area?

Ah, thanks, I’ll keep that in mind!
