Hello,

Yesterday, I read a lot about capillary break layers. There seems to be some debate about whether they should include fines or be free of fines. Gravel with grain sizes of 8/32 mm (0.3/1.25 inches) or 0/32 mm (0/1.25 inches) is recommended.

Is it also possible to use gravel of 8/16 mm (0.3/0.6 inches) as a capillary break layer?

Furthermore, I read that gravel cannot be compacted. Does that mean you pour a layer of about 20 cm (8 inches) of gravel, place a membrane on top, and then pour a concrete slab of, for example, 25 cm (10 inches) above it? Is there no risk of settlement of the gravel layer?

Thank you very much,

Robert

Regarding the second question: I am currently compacting over a gravel layer that will hopefully be 20 cm (8 inches) thick in the end. This compacts quite a lot. In my case, only paving will be laid on top. I believe the gravel size is 0/32.
