We have had travertine installed on our terrace for a few years now. Gradually, unattractive darkening has appeared. The stone is cleaned twice a year with neutral soap and water, but it seems that dirt has settled into the fine pores and depressions.

It also appears to me that the stones are different from each other – but you can see for yourself in the pictures.

I understand that you shouldn’t use aggressive cleaning products on travertine, as it is a type of limestone. But what options are there? Or should the stone be completely sanded down? Does some kind of impregnation or sealing make sense for exterior use at all?

Never seen it like this before. I would spray it off with a pressure washer and then apply a sealant.

Ask Jonastone. They really know their travertine well and might be able to help.

I would not recommend using a high-pressure cleaner, as it almost always causes damage, regardless of the type of paving or surface.

I am curious whether a so-called "magic eraser" or a steam cleaner would help.
