Hello everyone,

I have a white Kallax shelving unit that has unfortunately developed a noticeably yellowed surface over the years. I am especially interested in how to gently and effectively remove the yellowing without damaging the surface or altering the white color. What tips or home remedies do you have for cleaning or restoring this type of surface? Experiences with special cleaners or care products are also very welcome. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

I can briefly explain the material’s mechanics: Kallax is usually melamine-coated and laminated with polystyrene or veneer-like finishes. Yellowing often occurs due to UV oxidation on the plastic surface or deposits from nicotine, grease, or dust particles.

Chemical agents such as 3% hydrogen peroxide can help here—best applied gently with a cotton cloth and rinsed off with clean water after 10-15 minutes. Never use overly aggressive methods or allow it to sit too long, as the plastic surface may be damaged.

An alternative is using special plastic cleaners or polish products from companies like Meguiar's or Autoschmiede, which restore moisture and color to the surface without damaging its texture.

Rubber erasers designed for plastic often work well on stains. Additionally, you can wipe the surface with 99% isopropanol, which removes many organic residues.

I am skeptical about that. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent that can soften plastic surfaces and cause microscopic cracks. It should only be used in very small amounts and under careful control. Alternatively, you might consider UV-activated cleaning methods or ozone treatment, but these are more industrial or professional options.

Isopropanol is strongly degreasing and can leave dull marks. Therefore, use caution and always perform preliminary tests.

Exactly, that’s why I always recommend following up with a mild care oil or plastic conditioner to seal the surface and achieve an even shine.

Here’s my summary again:
- First clean with mild agents and a microfiber cloth
- Then, if necessary, carefully test a melamine sponge
- Avoid harsh bleach products without prior testing
- Use care products after cleaning

Are there any particularly sensitive areas or other stresses on your shelf that should be taken into account?
