our house has a very large terrace with twice as much garden space. In the middle of the garden, there is a large stone fountain, and around it is just grass. Now my parents want to try doing something with all the open space. But they can’t really get started because they lack ideas... I’d appreciate some suggestions on how to nicely design a very neat/symmetrically arranged garden.

I agree: looking through gardening books and magazines helps you understand your personal style preferences. Then there’s the time investment to consider, so think about whether you have enough time to maintain flower beds. Gardening books cover every topic: small gardens, low-maintenance gardens, Japanese gardens, whimsical gardens, flower gardens, shade gardens, formal gardens, courtyards, English gardens, play gardens... It all also depends on your budget
