Hello,
In my new build, tiles have been installed in the open-plan kitchen/living area, hallway, and storage room.
The tiles have already been laid, but after inspecting them, I immediately stopped the grouting because I believe the workmanship is completely unsatisfactory.
1. I saw (as I was briefly present during the installation) that no primer was applied (this was part of the contract).
2. No stainless steel edge profiles were installed at the expansion joints in the door passage (this was part of the contract).
3. Some tiles were cut very unevenly, so that some tiles are flush against the wall while others have up to a 17cm (7 inch) gap to the wall.
4. Sometimes tiles are placed directly against each other (no grout joint), but there are also grout joints up to 4mm (0.16 inches) wide. Occasionally, tiles are laid crookedly, causing a grout joint along a single tile to widen by up to 2mm (0.08 inches).
5. Some corners of the tiles are chipped (both whole and cut tiles).
I was told that this is good workmanship, that it cannot be done better (due to the herringbone pattern), and that only the tiles directly against the wall need to be cut.
All tiles are calibrated and of very high quality.
I now have to decide how to proceed because, after a discussion, no agreement was reached and I was told the work is acceptable and cannot be improved.
Thank you very much Wolfgang
