Hello house building forum users,

Who among you has already had experience with a structural engineer?

What does hiring a structural engineer typically cost, and how are the fees calculated?

I am from Ulm and hope to start building in the fall.
The architect’s plans are mostly finished, now it’s the structural engineer’s turn...

If you already have a shell builder (I assume you do if you plan to start in the fall), ask them if they can recommend “their structural engineer” or someone they regularly work with. It’s always easier when the structural engineer and the shell builder know each other. That usually makes things much smoother.

I agree with you. My concern is that if the structural engineer and the shell builder know each other too well, unnecessary items might be listed and charged that aren’t actually essential... you know what I mean.

Material costs, labor costs, etc.

That’s the wrong way of thinking. Do as you see fit. A smooth construction process saves more than you might end up paying for supposed favoritism.

Regarding your question,
It depends on what type of house you want to build.
For timber houses (timber frame, glued laminated timber, or solid wood), I can recommend Müller-Blaustein.
For masonry or concrete construction (house or just the basement), I suggest Bieger & Maidel in Ehingen.
Both are located near Ulm.
However, as mentioned above, if the construction company uses their trusted structural engineer, whom they work with regularly, the process usually runs more smoothly.
If you want to manage everything yourself, you will need a good construction manager who can confirm this as well. In that case, it would be better if this person also coordinates with the structural engineer and has all the information readily available.
