Hello dear community,
Due to the difficult situation of acquiring a plot of land, we are still somewhat far from starting our house construction project.
Nevertheless, I have been dealing with the topic for quite some time now.
On my wish list, one of the top priorities is grid windows, specifically those that were commonly used in industrial buildings and courtyards in the past. I have attached a picture, which already shows a modern version, installed in an architect-designed house in Hamburg.
Regarding my issue: The targeted windows are usually steel windows, which allow for very delicate detailing. However, steel is naturally a strong thermal bridge.
Therefore, I am looking for companies that offer thermally broken steel windows. So far, my research has identified:
Montastahl, a small company in Berlin,
and, I believe, MHB Stahlbau.
Do you know of any other companies? Have you installed such windows yourselves and can share your experiences or provide any information on the costs?
Additionally, I am looking for alternatives in aluminum. I often find the look somewhat “bulkier,” but I might not be able to avoid it. In the worst case, I might even give up the grids. There is a wide range available on the market then. But first, I want to pursue the optimum solution. 😉

Among other things, sash windows are at the top of my wish list and [...] In the worst case, I’m also willing to do without the sash bars. I don’t quite follow that: are sash windows very important, or are you okay with windows without the sash bars if necessary (? ? ?)

Yes, they are at the very top of the priority list. But if it’s not possible, for example due to a poor balance between design/functionality or energy loss, or possibly an unreasonable additional cost, then they have to be removed from the list. I wouldn’t make my entire house build dependent on that 😉
However, as I said, they are high on the priority list, and we would be willing to spend more money on them within our means, sacrificing other things or increasing the budget.
For me, that’s not a contradiction.
But that’s not what this is about right now. I’m very grateful for all tips and experiences and will share any updates if I have new information.
