Hello everyone,
I noticed that the door catch on my Billy shelving unit is no longer working properly – the door doesn’t close securely anymore, which is especially noticeable with the smooth doors. Now I want to replace the door catch, but I’m unsure how to find a suitable replacement.

Are there specific dimensions, types, or mounting methods I should pay attention to?
What should I consider when buying to make sure the new catch isn’t too weak or too strong?
And can the catch be easily replaced by myself, or is there a recommended procedure?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

With IKEA shelves, you often can’t just use any magnet.

I always find it interesting how a huge technical fuss develops over seemingly simple problems.

Does a magnet really need to fit exactly? Most of the time, I use a standard furniture door magnet and adapt it as needed with small wooden strips or spacers.

Honestly, the effort to get the measurement exactly right is often not worth the time you have to invest.

As soon as you find a magnet with a similar holding force, that’s good enough.

So why not think pragmatically? Most of the time, "any" magnet that holds reasonably well will do. Of course, if you want it perfect, that’s another matter.

Hello Fajari,
I would like to add the following: The holding force of the magnet is, as already mentioned, extremely important. A magnet that is too strong may make the door difficult to open, which will only cause frustration.

It is also very important that the magnet is rust-resistant or at least coated, especially if the shelf is located in a more humid room.

Another tip: If you order online, pay attention to customer reviews and product images. This often helps in making the right choice.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help – exchanging ideas is often easier than you might think and can be enjoyable in the end. 🙂
